Il Pino di Biserno truly represents the unique terroir of Bibbona. The special blend of grapes makes Il Pino a classic wine of the Upper Maremma. Although produced from grapes from the youngest vineyards, the wine is distinguished by its balance and finesse. Il Pino demonstrates the character as well as the potential of Tenuta di Biserno.

Harvest Note
2018 harvest was cool and rainy in spring with a regular hot summer. Soil type is part clay, part Bolgheri conglomerate. Vine training is spurred cordon with plant density of 6,500 vines per hectare.  Fermentation took place for 14 to 21 days at 77 to 82 Fahrenheit.  60% percent of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in oak barrels, the remainder in stainless steel.  The wine was aged for 15 months in 75% new French oak barriques and the rest in one year old barrels.  The wine was further aged for 12 months in bottle before release. Overall, this vintage is very elegant, similar to 2010 with smoother tannins.

About the Grape

Cabernet Franc
Cabernet Franc usually shows tart red cherry and wild currant aromas and flavors with an herbal, spicy character. In the Loire, esp. Chinon and Saumur-Champigny, this grape shows firm minerality.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon is adaptable to various growing conditions, and is known for its low yield and late ripeness. It generally produces full-bodied wines with substantial acidity and tannins.
Merlot
Merlot makes plump, succulent wines to drink young or opulently massive wines for aging. Has silky, blackberry and currant fruit, with spice, earth, tobacco and chocolate notes, and soft tannins.
Petit Verdot
Petit Verdot makes a dark, firmly structured, tannic wine with superbly balancing acidity, and fresh, full flavors and aromas of spice, pepper and black fruits with notes of violets.
