Wiese & Krohn's estate Quinta do Retiro Novo is located in Sarzedinho, a very small village in the Rio Torto valley. In this area the nature of the soil where the vines are growing, the altitude, the locality, the (low) productivity and the slope of the vineyards are particularly favorable to the production of quality Ports. Fermentation is halted by the addition of grape spirits before all the residual sugar has been fermented, creating a sweet, fortified wine. Single Quinta Vintage is a blend of ports from a single vineyard. Aged for 2 years in seasoned oak vats before bottling, this wine will continue to age in bottle for decades.

Harvest Note
The 2003 / 2004 winter was very dry, having only rained 1/3 of the quantity registered the previous winter. The lack of water during the early part of the growing season led to very little pressure from disease. Our concern in July was mainly one of doubting the vines capacity to ripen the grapes due to the drastic shortage of water. The vintage stood out for the perfect weather conditions for the whole period. The young Ports showed good structure with very fresh berry fruit aromas, resulting from the cooler than normal ripening period.
Tasting Note
Dark blue, nearly black in color. Mulberry and dark woodland fruit. Delicate cedary and floral scents are set against a well-defined fruity background of blackcurrant and plum. The deceptively supple middle palate gives way to a long finish, revealing firm well integrated tannins. A beautifully balanced wine, understated and harmonious, justifying the house’s reputation as a master of the Port blend.
Food Pairing
Walnuts and various cheeses such as Stilton and Dorset Blue Vinny. Also dried fruits such as apricots or figs.

About the Grape

Tinta Barroca
Used to make Port wines, this high yielding grape has very high sugar content, which makes wines with pronounced floral character, good structure and firm, ripe tannins.
Tinta Cão
This grape has blackberry, game and meaty aromas, and contributes longevity and exceptional elegance to the blend of Port wines.
Tinta Roriz
Tinta Roriz produces deep-colored grapes of moderate acidity which make bold wines with firm tannins, excellent complexity and distinctive resin-like fragrance.
Touriga Franca
This grape has high tannins and is very aromatic; it lends structure and balance to Port wines. It shows intense fresh red fruit, earth and flower aromas, and is very fruity on the palate.
Touriga Nacional
Touriga Nacional produces wine with finesse, body and warmth that is dark, concentrated, massively tannic and aromatic. It ages to show the complex aromas typically found in mature vintage port.
