Tinta Barroca

Expression

The vines yield ample quantities of grapes with very high sugar content. It is typically used to build structure in Porto.

Growing Conditions

This highly vigorous, robust vine – among the finest for the production of port – must be sited in cool conditions on north or east facing slopes at relatively high altitudes. Loosely knit clusters that allow for air circulation make it resistant to rot, though it is sensitive to drought.

Origin and History

Tinta Barroca, having been cultivated only for the past century, is one of the Douro’s most recent varieties. It is planted in 10.5 percent of Portugal’s Port producing vineyards, and is the third most prevalent vine.
