Alicante Bouschet

Expression

Not vinified as a single variety, Alicante Bouschet is primarily used as a blending grape. In France it is the most widely planted Teinturier grape; a red-fleshed grape used to enhance color in red wines without changing the flavor profile.

Growing Conditions

Alicante Bouschet is an unusual red-skinned, red-fleshed grape. It has thick skin and is resistant to rot but prone to downy mildew. It buds and ripens early and attains normal to low alcohol levels.

Origin and History

Widely cultivated since its origin in 1866, Alicante Bouschet was bred by Henri Bouschet by crossing his father’s Petit Bouschet hybrid and Grenache.
