Terroir & Vineyards

The Taittinger estate is one of the three most extensive in the Champagne district. Whereas most large houses purchase the bulk of their fruit from numerous small contract growers rather than owning their own vineyards, Champagne Taittinger is proprietor of approximately 712 acres of vines in 34 different vineyards and draws about 50% of its fruit from its estate vineyards. It is the firm’s major holdings in Chardonnay vineyards—most located in the most prestigious Chardonnay region, the Côte des Blancs—that are the physical expression of the Taittinger philosophy and style.

The Côte des Blancs

Running south of Epernay, these east-facing vineyards are considered the finest source of Chardonnay grapes, from which the region takes its name. Here, Taittinger owns vineyards in Grand Cru villages from Vertus to Mailly. Chardonnay gives the Champagne blend freshness, delicacy and elegance.

The Montagne de Reims

Planted mostly to Pinot Noir, with some Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, this region is a wooded landmass with multifaceted aspects between Epernay and the city of Reims. Taittinger’s holdings in the region include vineyards in the Grands Crus of Bouzy, Mailly, Ambonnay and Verzenay, among others. Pinot Noir in general, and in particular wines from Montagne de Reims, contribute structure and bouquet to a blend.
